Traditional password reset systems involve providing some account details such as username or account number, answers to security questions, and a recovery email address. Users would then receive an email containing a link to where they can reset their password.

However, some problems may arise which could lead to the inability to reset the password of a user’s account. A common problem with password reset services is the email not arriving. This could be because the user no longer has access to the recovery email or that the email address has marked the password reset system’s admin email address as spam or junk. A more serious problem involves fraudsters intercepting the email and accessing the link before their victim does. A fraudster simply needs access to the victim’s email account, or even in possession of the victim’s smartphone device which will most likely have their email logged in. From there, the fraudster can search the inbox for accounts attached to the email and then request a password reset. Once the password reset email is sent, the fraudster can follow the link and change the password for the targeted account.

While organizations can completely replace or improve upon passwords as a verification method, others intend to keep passwords due to their simplicity and convenience. Fortunately, these organizations can still experience the security and user experience benefits voice biometrics provides by replacing password reset links via emails with voice biometrics. Using voice biometrics to verify a user’s identity and authorize a password reset request can be available 24/7 and provide a seamless and convenient experience.

With voice biometrics, users can simply verify their identity by using their voice. Providing sensitive details such as answers to security questions and their email address would not be required as users only need to say a phrase such as saying their account or phone number. This is then cross-matched against the claimed identity’s enrolled voiceprint to ensure the person who is requesting the password reset is really who they say they are. In addition, Auraya’s voice biometrics technology features fraud detection capabilities such as synthetic voice and recorded payback detection. The system will be able to detect and flag such fraudster attempts, mitigating the chances of fraudsters successfully requesting a password reset. Overall, voice biometrics provides an additional layer of security as fraudsters can’t simply defraud a victim’s account even if they have stolen their victim’s identity and personal details.
